4 REASONS WHY YOUR PROTEIN POWDER SHOULD BE VEGAN

Being vegan, a lot of people ask me where I get my protein from. Vegetables have protein, people! But seriously, if you are eating a variety of nutrient-dense foods you can get enough protein. Although, I’m currently training 5-6 times a week and I need more protein in my diet to increase recovery and repair and build muscle. That means that I supplement with protein powder. Whey-based protein powders are the easiest and most common but here are 4 reasons why your protein powder should be vegan:

  1. VEGAN PROTEIN POWDER HAS LESS SIDE EFFECTS THAN WHEY

Whey is derived from dairy which can cause a lot of inflammation in the body. Depending on how your body processes dairy, it can most commonly cause bloating, acne, and upset your gut. If you are lactose-intolerant or have any negative side effects from whey protein you should definitely look at vegan protein powder.

  2. IT’S EASIER TO DIGEST

Vegan protein powders are typically made from either pea, hemp, pumpkin seed, brown rice or a mixture of all of those. Our bodies can typically digest and absorb nutrients from these ingredients easily and they are high in fibre.

  3. VEGAN PROTEIN IS JUST AS EFFECTIVE AS WHEY

One reason that whey protein is so effective is that it’s a “complete protein”. Which means it contains the nine essential amino acids needed to repair and build muscle. There are vegan protein powders available with these amino acids and also have comparable macronutrients to whey. (Photo on the left is from a whey protein and the photon on the right is vegan)

4. VEGAN PROTEIN POWDER HAS MORE NUTRIENTS

Because vegan protein is plant-based and comes from whole-foods it’s more nutrient-dense, it contains a lot of vitamins and minerals. Trust me, vegan protein will leave you feeling better overall.

I’ve tried and tested a lot of protein powders and my favourite so far have been Canadian Protein and Iron Vegan Sprouted Protein. I like them best with almond or oat milk or blended with ice and a banana.
